Kirk and I embarked on a unique journey after selling our house in Canada—traveling the world by cruise ship and going on road trips around the world. Among the many places we've explored, Icy Strait, Alaska, holds a special place in our hearts.

Although not all Alaskan cruise ships go to this location, we have been to Icy Strait Point three times. This hidden gem has become sort of a regular stop for us, where we've uncovered countless adventures without the need for costly excursions. Join us as we unveil the beauty and charm of Icy Strait Point on a budget, without compromising your once in a lifetime experience!

The Charm of Icy Strait Point

Nestled near the village of Hoonah, of a distance of about 2 miles from the cruise dock, Icy Strait Point captivates visitors with its untouched, pristine wilderness, rich history and warm community spirit. In our opinion, this region isn’t just a cruise ship destination; it’s a gateway to Alaska’s natural wonders and cultural heritage. It offers a glimpse into the culture and natural beauty of the region.

In Icy Strait, there are two cruise docks, and we have had the chance to experience both from different ships. The docks are pretty close to one another, so don't feel like you are missing out by not being at the other one when you dock. You don't have to walk too far to be in the thick of things, as everything is pretty much 'right there'!

Why Cruises Go There

Cruise ships frequent Icy Strait Point for its stunning landscapes and unique attractions. From the thrill of the world’s largest zipline to the serene beauty of whale-watching moments, every corner of Icy Strait Point offers an authentic Alaskan experience. The area is renowned for its abundant wildlife, including whales, eagles, and bears, making it a prime spot for nature enthusiasts. This port really has something for everyone, and that is why, I think, it is a popular port with cruise ships!

Top 10 Things To Do While Exploring Icy Strait Point On A Budget

You could spend an hour there, or you can spend the entire day, but before I go on, might I suggest to bring an umbrella! I don't know why, but every time that we have come to Icy Strait Point in Alaska, it had some rain!

Here is our Top 10 list of suggestions of what you could do with your time while exploring Icy Strait Point on a budget:

  1. Regardless of which dock we start from, we always immediately go to the easy .5 mile nature trail! Be aware that there are warnings of bears, and that you need to walk in groups. We haven't seen a bear on any of our walks, but then again, there are many people walking on the trail at the same time, likely scaring all of the bears away. On this nature trail, you will not only see beautiful trees covered in moss, but you will also find some trivia hanging in the trees, and be able to take advantage of several benches along the trail to rest at and absorb the scenery along the way.

2. If you experience the nature trail going one way, then we highly recommend taking the free gondola ride back. You will see and experience some wonderful panoramic views of the surroundings. The gondola is a short ride, and you can embark in a group of up to 6 people quite quickly. We absolutely love doing this ride, and know that you will love it too.

3. One of the highlights of Icy Strait is watching the zipliners who zip across the sky along the largest zipline in the world. It's exhilarating to see people zoom down the line, and it's a great free activity to enjoy the excitement without participating. Look UP, and listen the screams and cries of these brave souls! Although we have never been on the zip line ourselves, we have had MANY people come up to us and tell is that it is amazing, and well worth the cost. You would have to take the transporter up to Wilderness Landing, another popular spot that we've heard great things about the beautiful views and serene environment.

4. Walk along the waterfront and watch the whales for FREE. No matter where you stand, it is unlikely that you won't see a whale. It is a scene straight out of a nature documentary, where these majestic creatures roam freely, providing unforgettable moment for every visitor. You really should not miss the opportunity for free whale watching in Icy Strait. Many whales swim close to the shore, offering incredible viewing and video opportunities. You could also choose to sit and have a snack at the Duck Point Restaurant, as this is a scenic spot that is perfect for wildlife spotting and enjoying the natural beauty of Alaska. It's a breathtaking sight that we never get tired of.

5. Check out the local Icy Strait Museum and Historic Cannery! A free visit to these places reveals the rich tapestry of Alaska’s past. Here, artifacts and stories intertwine, offering insights into the lives of early settlers and the resilient spirit of the Tlingit people. There is a lot of information and exhibits in these places. It is quite fascinating overall.

6. Walk behind the museum toward the ticket booth for the shuttle, and find the Veterans Memorial Sea Walk to Hoonah. Of course you can go to town by shuttle for a small fee, or you can walk along the waterway, admiring all of the wildlife along your 1.5 mile walk to town.

7. Just a stone’s throw from Icy Strait lies Hoonah, a village steeped in Tlingit heritage and Alaskan hospitality. Stroll through its streets adorned with totem poles and artisan shops, where every corner tells a story of tradition and community pride.

8. If they are open on the day of your visit, we would recommend that you indulge in the sweetness of Lil' Gen's Doughnuts, a local treat that warms the heart as much as it delights the taste buds. Each bite is a reminder of the vibrant community that welcomes travelers with open arms. Each mini doughnut sold contributes in helping sustain the community! We often purchase a few doughnuts for some of the staff on the ship; however, if you want them for yourself, you really should eat them while they are still hot!

9. We also love to explore the shops for their unique souvenirs and gifts. If you like browsing, there are plenty of opportunities to do so here! There are local people selling and showing off some great things, so this is a great place to spend some money if you feel so inclined.

10. Take your picture next to the giant whale statue. Everyone who comes here seems to have a great time taking their photo with the whale. You can spend your time people watching, or wait your turn to get that must-have photo! Either way, you can't miss the whale.
